The Sacrament of Holy Orders

Are you considering a vocation the priesthood or religious life?

Discernment is a natural process, and everyone considering a call from our Lord experiences, to some degree, a time of discernment.  If you are considering the possibility of priesthood or religious life, please contact Fr. Larry and/or Fr. Greg Ihm at the Diocese of Madison Office for Vocations.  They would be happy to chat with you to answer any questions you might have and let you know the next steps to take.

More about the Sacrament of Holy Orders:

Others are called to share specially in Christ's priesthood. In the Old Covenant, even though Israel was a kingdom of priests (Exodus 19:6), the Lord called certain men to a special priestly ministry (Exodus 19:22). In the New Covenant, even though Christians are a kingdom of priests (1 Peter 2:9), Jesus calls certain men to a special priestly ministry (Romans 15:15-16).

This Sacrament is called Holy Orders. Through it priests are ordained and thus empowered to serve the Church (2 Timothy 1:5-7) as pastors, teachers, and spiritual fathers who heal, feed, and strengthen God's people—most importantly through preaching and the administration of the Sacraments.

Prayer for Vocations

Lord, we believe that You are present in the Holy Eucharist.  Please watch over your Mystical Body, the Church, and send it shepherds to guide it.  Grant our Diocese of Madison an increase in vocations to priesthood, deaconate, religious life, and sacramental married life.  Help us to be instruments of your will in guiding young people through our teaching of the Catholic faith and the example of our lives.  Instill in parents a desire to offer a child to priesthood or religious life, and sanctify priests, brothers, and sisters to be models of virtue and love.  We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
